And the yard - and garden - progress...

After being gone for a month-long road trip, during which time some awesome friends cared for our garden, we are catching up a bit. Here's what we have...


OK, had to start with the compost pile. I love composting. Keeps us from throwing all our veggie waste into the landfill - plus turns out some amazing soil. Some folks insist you have to have a certain percentage of this and that and have to turn it regularly. Well, 4 weeks of no care just shows - compost happens!

Xeriscaped area exploded!

Our potatoes in back are off to a great start...I guess. Never done potatoes in bales. Guess we'll find out how it does.

These "Hill Bales" are having issues. It may just get too hot back there. This is a new transplant.

I have been wanting to make acorn squash stuffed with apples and Craisins, but I kept getting held up because I couldn't find a recipe I wanted. Red Chili Candied Bacon

If you like to get hit by the one-two punch of sweet and heat, and if you love bacon, then you need to try this recipe! It is super simple and super delicious! This recipe is as easy as mix the chili powder & brown sugar, dredge the bacon in the mixture, and bake. Almost done baking... Red Chili Candied Bacon Ingredients: Thick cut bacon (about a half a pound) cut in half lengthwise 1/4 c packed brown sugar 2 T Chili Powder Note: This chili powder can definitely get your attention. If you are not a fan of heat, you can use whatever heat of chili powder you like, but a little heat definitely balances out the sweet from the brown sugar. Southwestern Chowder

 It's fall! That means you can still score some roasted green chiles, and the temperatures have enough variation that you just might be able to enjoy a nice, rich bowl of soup wihtout having to run the AC to convince yourself it really is cooling off.  I love this recipe because of the way the flavors meld together. Between the green chiles and the chipotle chiles, it is not for the faint-of-tastebud. However, you can always adjust the recipe by reducing the heat of the green chiles used or the amount of both types of chiles. And the recipe includes some other tips on adjusting the heat for a multitude of palates.
